On her very first expedition cruise, Wild Earth Travel intern Enya, explores New Zealand’s stunning Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman.

Over the past nine days, I had the privilege of joining the Heritage Explorer on an unforgettable journey, venturing deep into the Marlborough Sounds and Abel Tasman National Park. What happened was not just a cruise through stunning landscapes, but a true expedition — filled with unique wildlife encounters and a deepened appreciation for New Zealand’s nature.

Our journey began in Picton, where we were welcomed aboard with scones — lovingly prepared by our incredible chef. As the Heritage Explorer eased away from the dock, the sun dipped low, casting a golden shimmer across the green hills.

With only 13 passengers and 6 crew members, the ship felt more like a home than a vessel. Over the days that followed, the sense of community grew — enhanced by shared adventures, and exciting conversations over ceviche made from the fish we caught ourselves, or while kayaking through clear waters. Each evening, the expedition guides delivered a presentation on a subject that had been the focus during the day.

Wildlife

Every day brought new landscapes and surprises. One of my personal highlights? In Catherine Bay we encountered a leopard seal lounging on an old fishing boat. Later, a massive pod of about 100 dolphins greeted us outside Tasman Bay, their playful energy infectious as they darted and danced around our boat — even with a few curious calves in tow. Both sights felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Though I’m no birder, I quickly learned to appreciate the variety of life around us and learned a lot about the South Island robin, New Zealand fantail or King Shags (especially near Duffers Reef) we encountered. The expedition guides, who were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, brought each sighting to life with fascinating stories and new insights.

Hiking

Expedition life means getting your shoes dirty (luckily there where gumboots on board) - From the Ngawhakawhiti Walk to Elaine Bay, to the slippery waterfall trek in Catherine Bay, to climbing up to the French Pass viewpoint— each hike taught me something different about the land.

My favourite? The (only) rainy-day adventure in Abel Tasman National Park. Mist hung low over the forested hills, contrasting with the golden beaches and brown streams. After lunch in a hut, part of our group hiked to Anchorage Bay, where the moody weather only made the views more dramatic.

Reflections

It wasn’t just about the places — it was about the people. The Heritage Explorer crew quickly felt like family, and the passengers each brought their own stories and passions. This trip didn’t just show me beautiful landscapes — it changed how I see them. I came away with a deeper appreciation for nature, for New Zealand’s rich history and ecosystems, and for the joy of learning through experience.
