Wild Earth Travel marketing expert, Nyssa, travelled with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises aboard the Hanseatic Inspiration through Japan's Lesser-known Islands, and here are her reflections on the vessel...

"I quickly settled into the rhythm of life aboard Hanseatic Inspiration. Each day found its own balance between time exploring ashore, enjoying the ship's facilities, and winding down over an excellent dining experience with fellow travellers."

Cabins
Cabins range from 21m² Outside Cabins through to the impressive 71m² Grand Suites.
I stayed in a 21m² Panoramic Cabin, and honestly, it felt much larger. As you'd expect from a German-designed ship, every centimetre has been thoughtfully planned. There was so much storage that I worried I'd forget where I'd put things. Some cupboards are so cleverly integrated into the design you almost don't notice they're there.
Some of my favourite cabin features included:
- Heated bathroom wall - perfect for drying towels, swimmers and, in colder climates, expedition gear.
- Large rain shower plus handheld shower (which can both be used together).
- Nespresso coffee machine.
- Mini bar replenished daily.
- Cabin serviced morning and evening.
- Complimentary shoe cleaning – Leave your adventure-worn shoes outside your door and they'll magically reappear spotless, ready for tomorrow's explorations.
- Infotainment system with expedition lectures (live and recorded), navigation charts, bridge camera, movies and more.

Public Areas
The public spaces are one of Hanseatic Inspiration's greatest strengths. They're bright, spacious and inviting, making it easy to spend very little time in your cabin.
Health and wellness are clearly a priority. The gym spans two rooms - one with equipment and another for stretching, classes or personal workouts - both flooded with natural light and overlooking the ocean. On one occasion the folding doors were opened onto the wraparound deck, letting in the fresh sea breeze while we exercised. Fitness instructor Markus also offers personal training sessions.
The spa is equally impressive, with a sauna, steam room, two rain showers and an ice basin (which I learned is for cooling down after the sauna). Massage and beauty treatments are also available.
The pool deck quickly became one of my favourite places onboard. Whether you wanted to swim, read, enjoy a drink or simply watch the scenery drift by, it was always relaxing. The heated pool sits at a comfortable 23°C and even has jets at each end if you feel like swimming against the current. Beside it is a jacuzzi large enough for six people.
Tucked away at the stern is the Ocean Academy - part library, part citizen science centre. It's filled with field guides, specimens, microscopes and fascinating displays, while expedition staff regularly drop in and are always happy to answer questions or chat about wildlife, geology or wherever we're exploring.
Afternoon tea is served daily from 3pm and became something I looked forward to, particularly thanks to the rotating soft-serve gelato flavours. The Observation Lounge on also on Deck 8 has panoramic views over the bow, comfortable seating, tea and coffee throughout the day, and a bar serving everything from espresso to evening cocktails. Every night our pianist Daniel (pictured below) played before and after dinner—and happily took requests.
There's also another bar on Deck 4 beside the HanseAtrium, which doubles as the lecture theatre. Cleverly, it can be divided into two separate venues, allowing presentations to run simultaneously in English and German.

Dining
With three restaurants onboard, there was always something to suit the mood.
The Lido Restaurant quickly became my go-to spot for breakfast and lunch. The buffet changed daily and featured freshly prepared dishes, salads, grilled meats and a daily hero dish. My favourite was the fresh sashimi, carved and prepared in front of us. On warmer days, the outdoor terrace and barbecue added an extra relaxed feel to lunchtime.
Dinner in the main restaurant was a more refined affair, with changing à la carte menus featuring modern international cuisine with a European influence. If you were after something familiar, there was also an always-available classics menu with favourites like steak and schnitzel.
Each Hanseatic ship (there are three in the fleet) also features its own speciality restaurant. On Hanseatic Inspiration, that's a Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant that genuinely feels like a high-end restaurant ashore rather than one at sea. One evening we watched fresh ceviche prepared tableside - definitely a highlight.
Between meals, the Observation Lounge always had pastries, fruit and light snacks available, while the adjoining bar served excellent coffee during the day before transforming into a cocktail bar each evening.
And if you simply felt like staying in, room service was always an option.

The Little Extras
One thing that really stood out was the effort the crew put into creating fun, unexpected moments onboard.
Our Cruise Director explained they try to do something different on every voyage, particularly as many guests are repeat travellers or continuing on back-to-back cruises.
One evening the Captain made an announcement inviting everyone into the hallways to "meet your neighbours" - even joking that guests were welcome to come out in their bathrobes (and quite a few did!). Crew members appeared with bottles of bubbles, which were shared between every few cabins, and within minutes complete strangers were chatting like old friends.
Another evening we stumbled across a surprise sake tasting in the foyer after dinner. Apparently on other voyages they've even turned one of the lifts into a tiny pop-up cocktail bar.
Those little surprises added personality to the voyage and made life onboard feel relaxed, social and genuinely memorable.
