There’s something special about a small-ship voyage — and sometimes, the magic happens between destinations. Last week, Wild Earth Travel hosted an exclusive relocation sailing aboard Heritage Adventurer, a three-day journey along the New Zealand coast from Auckland to Bluff that sold out quickly and delivered sunshine, laughter, and the kind of camaraderie only small ships can offer.
Unlike a traditional expedition voyage, this sailing was all about relaxing into life at sea. No landings, no zodiac cruises — just open ocean, warm weather, and the chance to enjoy the ship itself. And with more than 160 guests on board, this was one of the most uplifting voyages we’ve hosted to date.
Sunshine All the Way South
From the moment we sailed out of Auckland, we were treated to rare late-season sunshine. Blue skies followed Heritage Adventurer all the way down the East Coast of New Zealand, and even as we rounded the southern coast near Dunedin, the pool and sun loungers were still in full use — a true novelty in southern waters!

Expert Talks & Entertainment
Even without an expedition program, there was plenty happening on board. Heritage Expeditions’ guides Steve Todd and John Rogers joined the voyage, offering fascinating talks on the destinations Adventures visits across the globe.
Meanwhile, Wild Earth Travel’s Sarah Porter was on hosting duty — keeping spirits high with quizzes, bingo, travel talks, and even a “Nauti 40” dress-up night that quickly became a voyage highlight.
“I’m still a bit knackered… but it was absolutely worth it!” Sarah said afterwards. “We had the best weather, loads of laughs, and the kind of community feel you only get on a small ship.”

Glowing Feedback from Guests
From the restaurant team to the bar crew to the spa therapists, guests repeatedly praised the warmth and service on board. Many said it was one of the most relaxing voyages they’d ever taken — the perfect way to disconnect, watch the coastline roll by, and let the ship do the work.
Perhaps the strongest endorsement? The number of travellers already asking, “What’s next?” Interest in future Heritage Adventurer itineraries soared — including both expedition voyages and future relocation sailings.
