Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica - A true bucket list destination!

01 December, 2025

I have recently returned from an amazing Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica voyage with National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions aboard National Geographic Explorer.

Wow – what a voyage and destination!

Our very first wildlife encounter on the voyage was in the Falklands was a colony of Rockhopper penguins sharing their space with the local Albatross. What a sight and also the sounds! Our visit to the Falklands was great mixture of the local way of life, the history and wildlife.

After two days at sea and passing the A23a massive iceberg on the way we reached South Georgia. The opportunity to visit Shackleton’s grave with a toast of whiskey and explore the historic Grytviken whaling station was a real highlight. As many will know South Georgia is well known for large colonies of King Penguins, however the shear number is a sight to behold, as far as the eye can see. The large herds of elephant seals were also fascinating.

Our Antarctica experience started in the South Shetland Islands at Deception Island, an active underwater volcano. We arrived in the sunshine and left in the snow – a very magical moment.

One of the many advantages of visiting Antarctica early season is the destination is just coming out of the winter months, so the landscape is covered in pure white snow, and the ice is pristine. We experienced penguin colonies, glistening blue and white icebergs, humpback whales, rafts of penguins feeding and fresh snow.

I have found myself looking back at the photos and being in awe of the destination, places visited and the total experience.
