Embarking from Oslo to the Arctic, this expedition aboard the Ocean Nova sails through Svalbard’s glacier-laden Hornsund, ventures close to Greenland’s icy shores for marine wildlife sightings, and explores the stark beauty and historical remnants of Sabine and Pendulum Islands. Journeying through the musk-oxen populated Emperor Franz Joseph Fjord and the ice maze of Scoresby Sund, adventurers will experience the Arctic's rugged landscapes and wildlife. The voyage then heads towards Iceland, with a finale through the cetacean-rich Danish Strait, culminating in a cultural exploration from Akureyri to Keflavik. Southern Svalbard is renowned for its landscapes and peak summit where 12 glaciers converge, the Hornsundtid. The fjord is one of the most historically significant places. Ten glaciers meet the sea, seals and walruses are common sightings.
We will spend several hours sailing close to and within the ice floes that line the Northeast coast of Greenland in search seals and whales.
We will explore the remains of the Inuit who once inhabited this coast and the tragic polar expeditions around the old trapper huts. Giant tabular icebergs from Northern Greenland drift in the sea. Weather and ice conditions will determine our navigation.
In the fjords, we will navigate along the coast of the "painted rocks," sedimentary rocks from the primary age. Musk oxen are common in these fjords cluttered with icebergs and spectacular cliffs.
We will sail in the world's largest fjord, and giant icebergs will provide stunning landscapes. Landings, guided tours, and free time in the village of Ittoqqortoormiit. Glacial fronts, spectacular excursions in the tundra, and fields of icebergs will be our daily routine in the maze of these magnificent fjords. Musk oxen, Arctic hares, and seals are regular sightings.
The Danish Strait is renowned for its populations of cetaceans, which we'll observe from the decks of the ship.
Checking out in Akureyri and transfer to Keflavik along the picturesque road passing through the Glaumbaer museum, and the renowned Hvalfjord fjord. Free time in keflavik, Icelandic dinner, and overnight hotel stay.

The ice-strengthened expedition ship Ocean Nova was built in Denmark in 1992 with high ice class to serve Greenland’s west coast. In 2004 to 2005 she was completely refurbished and has now a career as a small and comfortable expedition ship. The Ocean Nova accommodates 86 passengers in single, double and triple cabins, all with sea-view and private facilities. The double cabins have either two lower beds or upper and lower beds. The triple cabins have upper and lower beds. In your cabin you will also find a desk with chair and ample storage space for clothes and equipment.
In the dining room you are treated to delicious meals in between landings and in the panorama lounge you can enjoy a drink with a breathtaking view of the surrounding polar landscape. This is where PolarQuest’s on board specialists entertain and educate you with lectures on polar biology, history, geology and conservation. There is also a library with panoramic views and a good selection of polar books. On board there is a satellite phone, gym and medical doctor. Passengers are welcome on the bridge around the clock and there is always something to see or search for from the spacious observation decks. The ship has North European officers and there is a friendly and informal atmosphere on board. Travelling with this small expedition ship offers an entirely different experience and perspective than you can get on a larger and more conventional cruise ship.
