Experience Central and South America - Fascinating Destinations for Expedition Travel

With a wide variety of climates and biomes, Central and South America are fascinating destinations for expedition travel. For this reason, those with a thirst for outdoor pursuits, knowledge of new cultures, and up-close encounters with interesting wildlife will relish our small-ship cruises and expeditions.

Costa Rica. Jungle jaunts and coastal chill in a tropical paradise. Introducing your new amigo – Costa Rica. An adventure hotspot for some, a cultural haven for others, Costa Rica definitely lives up to its translation: the ‘rich coast’. And as you journey under lush jungle canopies, along golden coastline, through colonial cities and laidback surf towns, you’ll soon be rich with memorable experiences. You could become a pro at spotting toucans in Monteverde’s steamy cloud forests, or listen out for the distant whoop of white-faced capuchins in Corcovado, but really, it’s the pace of life here that gets you. The phrase ‘hustle and bustle’ isn’t in Costa Rica’s vocabulary; as you’d expect from a country whose unofficial motto is ‘pura vida’ – the pure life.

Mexico. Peel back the lucha libre mask and you’ll find a patchwork of cultures and customs mixed into one tequila-drenched country. The gregarious locals are just as likely to pull you up for a dance at one of Mexico City’s hip-shaking salsa clubs as they are to show you the way to one of the country’s many ancient ruins, all with a casual ‘hola’ and an inviting smile. While our tours get you up close with locals, they also show you the best sights from on and off the gringo trail. You can party until dawn in Playa del Carmen, eat your way into a food coma in Oaxaca, or, best of all, kick back with a horchata in the lazy seaside port of Merida.

Panama. Home to one of the world's most exceptional modern engineering marvels, Panama invokes historic nostalgia. Yet there's more to this nation in Central America than the mighty Panama Canal, and travellers lucky enough to end up in Panama will be delightfully surprised by the uncrowded beaches, sensational surf breaks, magical rainforests and splendid colonial towns. It's high time the world's wanderers added Panama to their adventure agendas.

Argentina. Leafy vineyards, eclectic galleries, char-grilled barbecue evenings and epic waterfalls give travellers to Argentina one big tantalising adventure. From saucy cities brimming with bars to monster waterfalls and all the steak you can eat, Argentina promises (and delivers) good times to all who come. Drink to a good drop in Mendoza, be blown away by the aquatic thundering of Iguazu Falls, take a gondola up a mountain in Salta and lose yourself to some hip shakin’ nights in the bars of Buenos Aires. It’s hard to imagine the continent of South America (or the world) without that flaming wedge known as Argentina.

Chile. From the eclectic sprawl of Santiago to the glacial fjords of Chilean Patagonia, the world’s longest country is jam-packed with adventure. In a land of contrasts, be treated to a Mars-like experience travelling to the Atacama Desert. Wander through a family estate tasting wine in the Casablanca Valley and travel to the coastal town of Valparaiso – made famous by the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Fulfil a trekker’s dream to Patagonia in Torres del Paine National Park. Get around in the capital of Santiago, strolling through museums and park up at one of the many hip restaurants in the graffitied neighbourhood of Barrio Bellavista. Just follow the flow of Chile and collect the best of South America along the way.

Patagonia. Sandwiched between two oceans and sprawled across two countries, Patagonia is as ‘end-of-the-world’ as it gets. Advancing glaciers, gushing waterfalls, snow-topped granite pillars…it’s no wonder Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over this beautiful slice of South America. Where else can you hike past herds of guanaco, hear giant shards of ice crash into the sea, sail the Beagle Channel past unique flora and fauna, and drop by the world’s southernmost city? If anywhere makes you feel small, it’s Patagonia. Adventure to the end of the world and appreciate our planet at its most wild and spectacular.

Peru. Discover landscapes etched with enigmatic lines, wild Amazon jungle and soaring Andes mountains – Peru harbours secrets dating a millennium. While many travellers come to visit the country’s most famous site, the ruins of Machu Picchu, the real Peru lies within its warm, proud inhabitants – many of whom can trace their bloodlines back to the Incas. What you might not expect is the foodie bonanza found in Lima or the adventures that await you in the ancient capital of Cusco. Whether you’re exploring the cobbled streets of Arequipa, bobbing on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca or uncovering mummies in Nazca, our Peru tours will have you feeling like a modern-day Indiana Jones. Just don’t forget to pack your fedora.
