Discover North Africa Where Magic is Real

As the birthplace of three of the world’s major religions – Christianity, Islam, and Judaism – there’s something inherently spiritual about North Africa and the Middle East. You can feel it everywhere; in the ancient temples and mosques, in the intoxicating aromas of the bazaars and souks, even in the stunning mountains and ochre dunescapes that surround cities that have stood since the dawn of time. While the past is your constant companion in this part of the world, there’s plenty of room to write some history of your own.

Egypt. The kingdom of kingdoms. Egypt is a country of rugged and harsh beauty mixed with reminders of what was arguably the most impressive ancient civilization history has ever known. The awe-inspiring treasures and stunning landscapes of this country are perfectly complemented by the warmth and hospitality of its people. You can't travel back in time (at least, not yet), but exploring Egypt is close enough.

Israel. The past is the future. From all cultural, political, and historical perspectives, there's probably no country on Earth as interesting as Israel. Sacred ground to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, Israel is home to a dazzling diversity of influences and historic sites comingled across a modern state. And while contemporary life offers all manner of distractions, the remnants of the ancient world still captivate travellers eager to walk where history happened and continues to be made by the day.

Jordan. Land of eternal mystery. Visiting Jordan is the kind of trip you plan around the sights and return talking about the people. There's no shortage of sights: even in a region full of must-sees, Petra – an entire city carved from reddish sandstone cliffs – is one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in the world. Jordan's desert landscape and strangely familiar names evoke romantic images in the West; here, you can literally walk in the footsteps of Jesus or Lawrence of Arabia (or Indiana Jones, if you prefer). But whatever you tastes, be they the world-class diving in the Red Sea or the healing mud treatments of Dead Sea spas, Jordan's most lasting impression always seems to be its warm, welcoming people.

Morocco. Where the Sahara meets the sea. Beaches and Berbers, medinas and mosques, souks and sand dunes... Morocco has variety and an exotic feel that has fascinated travellers since long before the modern traveller arrived. Affordable and only a short ferry from Spain, Morocco's mix of traditional and modern strikes the perfect balance between the intensely exotic and comfortingly familiar. Cities like Fez, Marrakech, and Casablanca evoke images of medinas, spice markets, and couscous, while the geographic extremes – from the Atlas Mountains to beach resorts to camels in the desert – make it eminently photogenic. The mad circus of Marrakech's Djemaa el Fna square, packed with incense, salesmen, and snake charmers, is so bizarre and entertaining you'll be looking for the hidden camera.
