This cruise takes us to Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for being the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger, there will be plenty of opportunity to cruise the narrow channels of this forest (by local country boat) and look out for the King of the Jungle as well as numerous animals, including Chital deer, crocodiles, monitor lizards and bird life.

Please Note: This itinerary can be combined with Historic Lower Ganges Cruise (ABN Rajmahal)

Please Note: Upstream Departures are 5 Days long, Downstream Departures are 4 Days long.

Highlights

• KOLKATA/CALCUTTA - The City of Palaces, Calcutta was the capital of British India for around 150 years, and boasts much superb colonial architecture. It can also claim to be the intellectual capital of modern India, and is a thriving, bustling, colourful and up to date city, with some excellent shops. In the northern suburbs lie the old French, Dutch and Danish colonial enclaves, still retaining a distinctive flavour.

• SUNDARBANS - Home to one of the largest concentrations of Royal Bengal tigers on the planet, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sundarbans are a network of channels and semi-submerged mangroves that forms the world’s largest river delta.

Board the ship around 8.30 am. Cruise down the tidal river, passing Diamond Harbour and Kedgeree to the fishing port of Namkhana, where we turn out of the main stream and leave the Ganges waters behind.
We enter the maze of mangrove-covered islands which make up the Sundarbans – we may well see sails above the trees, since this is one of the last places on earth where sailing ships are used in day-to-day trade. We visit the crocodile rescue centre at Bhagabatpur. We continue to Jharkali to visit the tiger rescue centre before anchoring at Sajnakhali on the edge of the core area of the wildlife sanctuary.
We cruise the channels between the mangrove islands, using local country boats. Even if tigers prove elusive, there are crocodiles, deer, monitor lizards and rich bird life. Later, we sail for an hour or so to Godkhali.
We disembark this morning to drive back approx. 5 hours to central Kolkata or airport.
While every effort will be made to maintain the itinerary, in view of fluctuating river conditions and navigational or mechanical difficulties, all schedules and itineraries are subject to change without notice.

Our new ship, ABN Rajmahal, entered service on the Lower Ganges and the Ganges proper on schedule in mid-February 2014. Built in Kolkata, she is 50m long and powered by 3 engines; her extra-shallow draught and a lower profile than conventional designs allow her to cruise further upstream than any of her competitors.

ABN Rajmahal has 22 cabins: 14 spacious twin/double cabins on the upper deck; 4 twin/double cabins on the main deck; and 4 single cabins for which we charge no supplement. The décor is stylish and fresh with touches of colonial elegance, brought to life by traditional Indian-inspired designs on hand-blocked cotton fabrics. All cabins on ABN Rajmahal have French balconies.
