It awaits in the spectacular setting of the Bay of Kotor, which is framed by dramatic sheer cliffs that hug the walled town of Kotor below. This evening, you’ll enjoy a town tour.
Stay: 14 nights, MV Lady Eleganza
The fabled ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ is your destination today. The Old Town of Dubrovnik is a world of palaces, monasteries, churches and museums enclosed within the spectacular medieval city walls. Its maze of narrow limestone-faced streets, pressed between age-old stone buildings, is mesmerising.
SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE
This evening, enjoy a walking tour around Lopud, then take in the spectacular views from the old fort with a glass of champagne in hand.
You sail for the Elaphiti Islands off the Croatian coast, with a swim from the ship’s stern platform along the way. Just three of the 14 islands are inhabited, including Lopud, which is car-free.
Sunj is the most beautiful beach on verdant Lopud. The energetic can take a two-hour walk across the island, with the reward of superb views and a swim. Meanwhile, the Lady Eleganza will cruise to meet the walkers, and those who chose to remain on board will enjoy lovely island views before being ferried to the beach by Zodiac. The ship then leaves for Korčula, where the great explorer Marco Polo is said to have been born. You will arrive in the afternoon in time for a walking tour.
The picturesque town of Opuzen lies upstream on the Neretva River. After lunch, travel by coach over the border to fascinating Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its most famous landmark is the beautiful World Heritage-listed Stari Most (‘Old Bridge’) which arches high above the Neretva. It was rebuilt to its original medieval specifications after being damaged in the 1990s Balkan conflict. You’ll visit it and more on a walking tour. Dinner will be in a local restaurant with traditional entertainment.
From Opuzen you’ll sail in the morning to the lovely island of Brač. Your destination is Bol, whose main claim to fame is the astonishing Zlatni Rat (‘Golden Cape’), a beach comprised of tiny white pebbles that changes its shape with the vagaries of wind and waves, and thrusts into the turquoise sea like a spearhead. You have the chance to visit or swim, and to explore the town, notable for its 15th-century Dominican monastery and museum.
SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE
Travelling by Zodiac to a small island, you will land to a warm welcome from a local family on their private property. There is time for a swim, or to throw a fishing line into the Adriatic. Your hosts have prepared a sumptuous traditional lunch.
MV Lady Eleganza departs Bol. In the mid-afternoon you will sail on to Omiš, a port town that was once a pirate refuge.
This morning you’ll board small boats for an excursion on the emerald green Cetina River. You’ll head to picturesque Radmanove Mlinice (Radman’s Mills), established in 1772 to grind cereal for the people of Omiš. In the early afternoon Lady Eleganza sails for Split, where you take an evening walk around an historic city filled with Roman-era landmarks.
SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE
At the village of Radošić you’ll be welcomed with local brandy and doughnuts and enjoy traditional entertainment before a dinner of regional specialties.
You leave Split and set sail for Šibenik, an historic port town that is the gateway to the magnificent waterfalls of Krka National Park.
You’ll spend the morning strolling along boardwalks to view Krka’s waterfalls. The most memorable is Skradinski buk, which is made up of scores of separate cascades. Then Lady Eleganza sails to lively Zadar. Located on a small peninsula, Zadar, which historically rivalled Venice in importance, retains an impressive core of Roman ruins as well as some surprising modern flourishes.
Relax as the ship sails towards Lošinj island, which has a long history as a medieval maritime power and then as a health resort in the 19th century which attracted Budapest and Vienna’s elite, including royalty. The main town, Mali Lošinj, is characterised by pastel-coloured ship captains’ villas along its waterfront.
Today’s destination, Opatija, is a town of splendid Habsburg-era villas dating from its time as a fashionable 19th-century resort. Its long main promenade, known as the Lungomare, is lined with imposing homes with a backdrop of densely forested hills.
This morning Lady Eleganza heads to Pula, on the tip of the Istrian Peninsula, and a treasure trove of majestic Roman ruins. This afternoon you’ll experience the city’s highlight, the remarkably preserved Arena. Built in the first century AD, it housed up to 23,000 spectators who watched deadly gladiatorial battles.
After breakfast you make for Rovinj. It sits on a headland, with narrow houses huddled beneath St Euphemia church. Your walking tour will include the 18th-century Venetian-style church, dedicated to the martyred saint whose sarcophagus is said to have been miraculously washed ashore here around 800AD.
After breakfast it's time to bid a fond farewell to the MV Lady Eleganza. You will be transferred to Zagreb Airport for your onward flight.
