Antarctica & South Georgia

Antarctica & South Georgia

This is the best Antarctic expedition, a combination of the riches of the Southern Ocean where Albatross rule the waves with the beauty and isolation of South Georgia combined with the majesty of Antarctica. Nowhere on the planet is more pristine and less explored than its southern reaches, and our expedition coincides with the optimum time to visit this amazing world.

Antarctica is one of the most beautiful places on earth but it is the Southern Ocean which surrounds Antarctica, both shaping the landscape and providing the key to the biological richness of the region. This expedition encompasses everything that is one of the world’s last great wildernesses, and all while travelling in comfort aboard our purpose built expedition vessel M/V Plancius.
After departing Ushuaia in southern Argentina our first days are spent exploring the exceptional biological and historical richness of the Falkland Islands, the scene of human struggles with nature and one another, home to millions of seabirds and mammals we visit colonies teeming with energy and life.
Nearing South Georgia icebergs begin to appear signaling our arrival in the Polar realm, surely one of the most beautiful places on earth, a world where scenery and wildlife comes together in an unforgettable combination. Vast Penguin colonies sprawl across the lower slopes, towering above the icebound peaks that were Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final barrier to safety.
Our time in Antarctica is spent visiting raucous penguin colonies a visit coinciding with the hatching of chicks, zodiac cruising amongst the infinitely varied and uniformly beautiful ice, watching for whales as the ship cruises through a constantly changing world of ice and hopefully visiting one of the government scientific bases established to study this pristine world.
