Step back in time to a land that time has forgotten, a country that still uses the Julian Calendar, is the cradle of human kind and has civilations dating back to the time of King Solomon. This journey enables you to experience their fascinating history and a cultural kaleidoscope that is unparalleled in Africa. All set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and rich wildlife, many unique to this very special corner of Africa.
The historic north has been the palate for more than 25 centuries of Ethiopian civilization, much of which is still preserved today as we visit the 12th Century Churches of Lalibela, the historic Royal Castles of Gondar and then travel to the edge of the Danakil Desert, possible the most inhospitable place on earth and home to the Afar tribe. Venturing high into the Simien Mountains we encounter a world of natural beauty and abundant wildlife flourishing in the cool temperate conditions that prevail.
In the South, Bale National Park is the largest example of Afro-Alpine habitat, here a four thousand meter high plateau is broken by numerous spectacular volcanic peaks, alpine lakes and rocky gorges. The juniper forests, heather moorlands and after the rains wildflowers on the lower slopes all provide ideal habitat for the endemic Mountain Nyala, Semien Fox, and abundant colourful birdlife.
While in Ethiopia’s far south the Mago National Park has strong ecological affinities to the East African Savanna and we encounter grazing Gazelle, Buffalo, Topi and Zebra. The southern tribes have remained unchanged for centuries and we will have the rare privilege of visiting these people in their homes.
Ethiopia has over eighty distinct languages but you will be warmly welcomed by its many diverse and unique peoples, with their proud traditions carefully preserved. Join Sue Verrall as she shows you her Ethiopia, a country that she knows intimately, has lived in for many years and explored extensively. This is a journey off the beaten path with the opportunity to see and experience the real Ethiopia.
