Exploration of Svalbard (MS Stockholm)

To many people, an expedition cruise to Svalbard is a life changing experience. The overwhelming scenes, extraordinary wildlife and unpredictable encounters with animals such as polar bears and walruses are simply very special. Not to forget the delicious meals and the comfortable cabins onboard the expedition ship M/S Stockholm, with its warm and friendly atmosphere.

During the long and dark winter months, Svalbard is covered in a blanket of snow and ice. This scene changes dramatically in the summer, when the pack ice loosens its grip around the islands and there is daylight 24 hours a day. Millions of sea birds migrate to their traditional nesting sites and the whole archipelago is literally teeming with life. This is when M/S Stockholm sets out across the Ice Fjord, heading for adventure.

The King of the Arctic, the polar bear, is sometimes spotted somewhere in between the mighty glaciers and wild mountain ranges. Not to forget the charming walruses of course. Many of our guests come to Svalbard to see the polar bear, however return home as walrus fans! Some ice remains in parts of the archipelago right through summer. This is where we find the larger resident mammals such as the bearded seal, a solid animal weighing some 300 kilos - and a favorite on the polar bear's menu.

Each voyage with M/S Stockholm is unique and its reputation for Svalbard exploration is in a class of its own! Our expert guides and a crew who are thoroughly at home in these Arctic waters make the most of every opportunity.

Exploration of Svalbard (MS Stockholm) itinerary:

Day 1 – 10
We arrive in Longyearbyen, embark our ship in the afternoon and leave civilization behind us. We are now in a part of the world where we are totally dependent on ice and weather conditions. Our exact itinerary depends on these factors and on the wildlife we encounter. The goal is to make landings each day with our Zodiacs and the following are examples of exciting places we may visit: Svalbard offers the visitor countless spectacular fjords such as Liefdefjorden, Krossfjorden and Raudfjorden, areas of immense natural beauty, dominated by beautifully sculptured glaciers. The ice floes are frequently visited by resting seals and walruses. North of Spitsbergen we may meet the pack ice edge. Not many ships venture here and we can marvel at the silence and grandeur of this icy landscape. Chances of meeting polar bears increase as we sail along the ice floes. If the ice allows we may enter Hinlopen Strait. Here is Alkefjellet, a sheer, basaltic cliff, which is the home for some 200 000 Brunnich’s guillemots. Nordaustlandet is covered by an enormous ice cap and fascinates naturalists as well as historians. There are huge glacier fronts here, intersected by hundreds of melt-waterfalls. Even further east is White Island. In very favorable ice and weather conditions, we may land on this ice-capped island where few people have ever set foot. Here Andrée and his men were found 33 years after their unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole with a hydrogen balloon. Barentsøya and Edgeøya offer magnificent landscapes of vast tundra. Chances are good to encounter walrus, arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer here.
Day 11
We arrive in Longyearbyen early morning and disembark the ship. Please note: Our exact route will depend on ice, weather conditions and wildlife sightings. Flexibility is the key to a successful expedition!

M/S Stockholm

The M/S Stockholm is a classic vessel built in 1953 for the Swedish National Maritime Administration. In 1999 she was totally refitted and started her career as a comfortable polar passenger ship. The M/S Stockholm exclusively carries a maximum of 12 passengers in outside twin cabins, all with upper and lower berth and private facilities. She is a marvellous piece of maritime history with beautiful brass details and pine decks. No wonder the M/S Stockholm is loved by so many!

On board the ship you will enjoy delicious meals in the company of likeminded travellers who enjoy the natural world, and who are as fascinated by the Arctic as you will be. The food on board is of a high standard. All wine, beer and drinks are included in the trip fare. With such a small party on board, this is like travelling on a private yacht. An entirely different experience and perspective to that of a larger and more conventional vessel! The M/S Stockholm is also ideal for private parties who wish to explore the Svalbard archipelago.

The owner, Captain and crew of the ship have long experience in Arctic waters, and are actively involved in making expeditions in tune with nature conservation. The crew onboard M/S Stockholm are great enthusiasts of the unique wildlife and unspoilt nature too, so do not be surprised if you suddenly see the chef ashore taking photographs or studying birds, whenever his time permits. The genuine curiosity of the crew is a prerequisite for expedition cruises of this kind. A trip  on board M/S Stockholm in these northern waters, with its unique wildlife and pristine nature is anexperience of a lifetime, simply hard to beat.
