CUBA TO COSTA RICA

This unusual exploration of the Caribbean Sea includes four days in captivating Cuba. We start with two days in Havana and then we work our way around the westernmost tip of the island before exploring the southern coast. It is an extraordinary place; glorious landscapes, delightful people and lifestyle that is more 1930s than that of today. Very few cars travel the roads through the soft and gentle countryside, horse drawn carriages or pedal power are the order of the day. So for a few days we step back in time and enjoy the beauty of the landscape, the historic cities and take a rest from 21st century capitalism.

From Cuba we sail across to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to view the Mayan site at Tulum and then we follow the Caribbean coast of the Central Americas. In Belize we encounter a vast barrier reef, second only in size to the Great Barrier Reef. We will explore this extraordinary natural site with our onboard naturalists and enjoy this marine paradise with its amazingly clear waters. We also have three little known islands to visit, Colombia’s San Andres and Isla Providencia together with the Honduran island of Roatan. These are beautiful and uncommercialised islands that offer a relaxing interlude in what promises to be an endlessly fascinating voyage. Our exploration ends in Costa Rica in Puerto Limon and from here you have the option of driving to the capital of San Jose for an overnight stay and returning to London or staying on in Costa Rica to visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

CUBA TO COSTA RICA itinerary:

Day 1 - LONDON HEATHROW TO NASSAU, BAHAMAS
Fly by scheduled flight via Miami and transfer to the MS Caledonian Sky. Sail this evening.
Day 2 - AT SEA
Sail through the islands of the Outer Bahamas.
Day 3 - HAVANA, CUBA
This morning we will discover Habana Vieja (Old Havana) which was once enclosed within fortified walls. We will explore its twisting, cobbled streets that lead to beautifully restored Baroque churches, castles and palaces and visit the 16th century Plaza de Armas, the oldest plaza in the city and its original administrative centre. Nowhere in the whole of the West Indies does the centuries of New World history come to life in such a dramatic way as in Old Havana. After lunch we will drive along the Malecon, Havana’s seafront to Varadero. See the Plaza de la Revolucion and the headquarters of President Fidel Castro and his Council of Ministers.
Day 4 - HAVANA
Enjoy a free morning to explore Havana further or join an optional ‘Hemingway’s Cuba’ tour. Visit Ernest Hemingway’s finca in San Francisco de Paula and the Ernest Hemingway Museum and later, call into Cojimar Village, the inspiration for ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. Return to the vessel for lunch and sail.
Day 5 - ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD
Located some 50 miles from Cuba’s south coast, this attractive island is famous for its beaches, coral reefs and densely forested hills. We have the afternoon to enjoy its natural beauty and learn of its early history when pirates made it their lair
Day 6 - CIENFUEGOS
Returning to the mainland we land at Cienfuegos, one of the most attractive cities on the island of Cuba. After a brief drive around the town we depart for Trinidad, driving through foothills of the palm covered Escambray Mountains and through quiet villages. Trinidad is without doubt the most handsome town in Cuba. It grew rich on sugar and the wealth it generated is evident along its cobblestone streets and elegant squares. Visit Museo Romantico, a colonial museum housed in a former merchant’s house and the ruined church of Ermita de Nuestra Senora for a dramatic view of the surrounding countryside.
Day 7 - AT SEA
A day to relax onboard and attend a lecture.
Day 8 - PLAYA DEL CARMEN FOR TULUM, MEXICO
Leaving Cuba we arrive at Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The unique Mayan site of Tulum is perched 40 feet above the sea on a cliff. It has a fascinating history and architecture with the pyramid, El Castillo, being the most impressive. Most Mayan sites are inland, so Tulum is a welcome exception particularly as it resides next to an excellent beach.
Day 9 - BELIZE CITY, BELIZE
Arriving in Belize, we have an interesting day ahead as we travel inland to the ancient Mayan city of Lamanai (translates to ‘submerged crocodile’). From the nearby town of Orange Walk Bridge we board local boats for a wildlife cruise through mangroves, wetlands and forests. A short walk through the jungle brings us to the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve with its massive pyramids which are in fact pyramids built upon pyramids. Local guides will tell the story of this site which is the only Mayan city known to have been inhabited through every age of Mayan civilisation.
Day 10 - HALF MOON CAYE
Sail out into the Caribbean Sea during the night for a day in paradise. Here there are reefs for the snorkellers to explore, the area was the first area to be environmentally protected in 1982 and is now part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There will be the opportunity to visit the red footed booby sanctuary, the only nesting site in the region, home to approximately 4000 of these large, somewhat gawky birds.
Day 11 - ROATAN, HONDURAS
Continuing our quest for hidden islands, we arrive at Islas de la Bahia and the island of Roatan. It is larger than our previous islands yet still possesses that magical air of times gone by. The island’s history is a turbulent mix of Spanish and British colonialism, slave trading, pirates and traders. On an island tour we will learn of Garifuna people, the native Indians of the Caribbean and visit the Carambola Botanical Garden.
Day 12 - AT SEA
A relaxing day onboard.
Day 13 - ISLA DE PROVIDENCIA, COLOMBIA
Often referred to as ‘Old Providence’ in English, Providencia is located 150 miles from the coast of Nicaragua. This is another beautiful Colombian Island that is little known and untouched by the hand of tourism. Along with its smaller sister island of Santa Catalina, it is enclosed by an extensive barrier reef system of some 35 km in length, making it one of the most significant reefs in the world. Here there will be the opportunity to travel in local boats to an area known as Seven Coloured Waters to view the barrier reef. Moor overnight.
Day 14 - SAN ANDRES
Sail at first light across to San Andres. Due to its location in the far south west corner of the Caribbean Sea and its relatively undeveloped tourism infrastructure, this Colombian owned island is not on the usual ‘cruise run’. The history of the island is replete with adventures of pirates and their invasions, and the occupations of the Spanish, Dutch and British.
Day 15 - PUERTO LIMON, COSTA RICA
Disembark this morning. Drive to the capital of San Jose for an overnight stay, enjoying a scenic journey and stopping for lunch
Day 16 - SAN JOSE TO LONDON
Transfer to the airport and fly by scheduled indirect flight via Miami to London.
Day 17 - LONDON HEATHROW
Arrive today.
