From the Coral Sea to the Spice Islands

It has been a delight planning our first ever trip that starts in Australia’s Coral Sea and takes us to the seas of Arafura, Ceram, Molucca and ends in Borneo on the shores of the Celebes Sea. It is certainly one of the least known and most inaccessible areas on the planet, but an absolute joy to visit. For the well travelled it offers a completely new experience.

Sailing from Cairns in Northern Queensland we stop at Australia’s far northern tip before heading for New Guinea, a revelation of exquisite wild beauty and exotic cultural wealth. With its incomparable biodiversity, both on land and in the surrounding waters, it also remains one of the most mysterious places on earth.

Astonishing recent discoveries of dozens of new land and marine species in the region have focused international attention on protecting this fragile environment. The incredible statistics speak for themselves, of the 284 known mammal species on New Guinea, 69 percent are endemic, as are half of the 578 species of breeding birds. Raja Ampat and Bird’s Head Seascape off the northwest coast are home to more than 1200 species of fish and 600 of coral, nearly 75 percent of the world’s known total.

The cultural elements of the region are equally unique. We spend two days at the Asmat villages, a collection of river villages where the traditions, spiritual beliefs and artistic craftsmanship is mindboggling. Few travel experiences surpass the arrival of Asmat “warriors”, painted and feathered, whooping and hollering as they paddle their carved canoes.

At Triton Bay, further along the coast of New Guinea we enter a truly magnificent area of stunning coastal scenery, extraordinary coral reefs and ancient cave paintings. But, perhaps best of all, the region is yet to be discovered by 21st century tourists.

Continuing in an easterly direction we enter the heart of the Coral Triangle, the most bio diverse marine region on earth. Sailing into the MacCluer Gulf with its breathtaking coastline of beautiful bays, tiny islets, pristine rain forest all viewed against a dramatic backdrop of towering mountains.

Leaving New Guinea we sail into the Ceram Sea, stopping briefly at the island of Misool to admire the fascinating site of hundreds of tiny islets, shaped by time to create the most unique landscape.

Our route continues east to the spice islands of the Moluccas where we stop at Ternate a verdant island of cloves and the northern shores of Sulawesi with their rich cultural heritage. Then across the Celebes Sea to the tiny Sabah islands of Mataking Besar and Kecil. Our journey ends in the port of Sandakan in Sabah from where you fly home via Kuala Lumpur.

Afloat and ashore, this trip will be filled with unforgettable images, sky-piercing volcanoes, remote idyllic islets, tribal villages unchanged for centuries, astonishing ceremonial dances, kaleidoscopic reefs, soaring white-tailed tropicbirds and sweet scented frangipani trees. We hope you will join us for this unparalleled opportunity to explore, in its entirety, one of the most intriguing and least known regions on the map.

Day 6 - CAPE YORK & THURSDAY ISLAND.
In the morning we alight from Zodiacs on Cape York to stand on Australia’s northernmost tip. Watch for the tall black-necked stork, the jabiru, patrolling the shoreline for fish. During World War Two, Cape York was a major staging area for the battles taking place against the Japanese in New Guinea and the Coral Sea, later visit the Gab Titui Cultural Centre.
Day 7 - AT SEA.
Days 8 & 9 - ASMAT VILLAGES, NEW GUINEA.
Our visit to the Asmat region is an expedition highlight. Our itinerary includes two days allowing us flexibility with the tidal movements. This remote riverine world is revealed to us as our Zodiacs take us along narrow waterways lined with the entwined branches of thick mangrove forests. Watch for Torres Strait imperial pigeons and bright red lorikeets flying overhead. Asmat woodcarvings are known for their powerful lines and coarse, expressive motifs, and are widely considered by collectors and scholars to be among the world’s finest. With our anthropologist helping us to communicate, we have the opportunity to purchase carvings and ikats directly from village artisans. As we make our way upstream, we are escorted to the local village of Agats where enthusiastic welcomes await. A walk along elevated wooden boardwalks leads to the Catholic cathedral with its superb carvings, and the museum with elaborate displays of ancestor poles, drums, body masks, shields, daggers and skulls, reminding us that ritual cannibalism was practiced by the ancestors of some villagers.
Day 10 - AT SEA.
We make our way along the southern shore of New Guinea in the wake of early adventurers and traders who brought the world spices, gold and pearls.
Day 11 - TRITON BAY.
Exceptionally picturesque, Triton Bay offers outstanding Zodiac cruising. Entering a small channel between Mauwara Island and mainland West Papua, we cruise through dazzling tropical waters and scenery of spellbinding natural beauty. Mushroom-shaped eroded limestone formations rise from the emerald water, covered with lush pandanus and betel palm vegetation, and a profusion of wild orchids. Though the area is uninhabited, small piles of shells and the occasional fishnet attest to human presence. Wildlife flourishes in this undisturbed habitat, including colourful bird species such as hornbills, rainbow lorikeets, helmeted friarbirds, egrets and black-palm cockatoos. During our expedition snorkellers can marvel at the world of soft corals and kaleidoscopic reef fish, including dinner-plate-sized angelfish, largestriped sweetlips and butterfly cod.
Day 12 - KOKAS, MACCLUER GULF.
Our last day in New Guinea will not disappoint as we sail into the MacCluer Gulf (Teluk Berau) with its breathtaking coastline of natural bays, tiny islets, pristine rain forest and soaring mountains. Dozens of local tribes, speaking different languages, populate the shores. We board Zodiacs to visit Kokas, strongly fortified by the Japanese during World War Two, and today a prosperous fishing town of 3,000 residents. A unique cultural heritage presentation of harmonic songs, drumming and the traditional Gabagaba or stick dance awaits.
Day 13 - MISOOL.
At first light we approach the island of Misool which is garlanded with hundreds of islets, a stunning site. Thought to be the most bio-diverse region on earth and including 600 species of hard coral and 1,200 types of reef fish. Recently, more than 50 species previously unknown to science have been discovered in its waters. Time and weather permitting we hope to have the opportunity to snorkel. Afternoon at sea.
Day 14 - TERNATE, HALMAHERA.
Sailing between the islands of the Molucca Sea we reach Ternate. Despite it’s tiny size, it is Ternate and a few neighbouring islands, that are responsible for the dried flower buds we have come to know as cloves. Colonised by the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch it is a charming place with an active volcano, lakes and a historic Sultan’s Palace.
Day 15 - MANADO.
Today, we reach the large island of Sulawesi and the city of Manado, Indonesia. It is an area of outstanding beaches offering marvellous snorkelling in the warm, clear waters. It will have been 10 days since we have seen any urban development, so some may prefer to keep it that way and beachcomb, whilst others can venture into town.
Day 16 - TOLI TOLI.
Having sailed along the length of the Sulawesi north coast we reach the charming village of Toli Toli. This idyllic sleepy little town is surrounded by lush green mountains. As with most places we have been in the last 10 days tourists are a rarity, allowing us to enjoy a few hours in the area with a drive through primitive villages, past ancient megaliths and along the scenic coast road.
Day 17 - PALAU MATAKING BESAR & KECIL, SABAH.
Today we leave the islands of Indonesia and arrive in Sabah. Here we find two islands which are connected by a sand bar. The waters surrounding are an undersea paradise. There will be time to snorkel amongst the stunningly beautiful reefs and for the last time on this voyage immerse yourself in the turquoise clear waters and stroll along the white powdery sand.
Day 18 - SANDAKAN, SABAH TO LONDON.
Disembark this morning and return to London via Singapore.
Day 19 - LONDON.
Arrive this morning.
