Sails Ashore - Stewart Island

Sails Ashore Lodge - Stewart Island © Heritage Travel Group

Sails Ashore was opened in Dec 2004 as a boutique luxury bed & breakfast and offers a perfect base for exploring Stewart Island.
Overlooking Halfmoon Bay and the islands of Foveaux Straits beyond, Sails Ashore is a short 4 minutes stroll from the village waterfront, set in a private native and flower garden.
Internal decor features extensive use of native Rimu timber, much of it salvaged from old logs, long sunk in a West Coast lake.  Muted colours, original artworks and the best of fittings make for an atmosphere of relaxed elegance. Begin the day with our special breakfast, at your convenience. Stewart Islanders try to ignore clocks as much as possible, adapting to suit the requirements of their guests.

Facilities include a sun room with harbour views, courtesy transfers, internet and an extensive library of books on local topics, plus photos & videos.

Perhaps take a scenic tour, the ideal way to get your bearings and learn a little about local history and village life.  A guided exploration of Ulva Island is a recommended highlight, with groups limited to a maximum of 6 for ideal wildlife viewing. The local walks are a relaxed way of exploring the forests and beaches the community nestles amongst.

Stewart Island/Rakiura National Park offers everything that is excellent about natural New Zealand. Virgin forest, deserted beaches, undisturbed bird and marine life are all easily viewed and enjoyed. The community is clustered around Halfmoon & Horseshoe Bays, having but 28 km of roads, leaving the rest of the 173500 hectare island virtually uninhabited.

And if the weather is a trifle boisterous the Museum, Dept of Conservation Centre and local craft shops are an easy way of spending an interesting hour or two.
Sails Ashore is all about exploring and enjoying the Island at your own pace. Your hosts, Iris & Peter, welcome you into their home and will be more than happy to share their knowledge of the Island with you.
